Like the good old days of appointment television, Colin From Accounts returns for a second season, airing every Thursday on BINGE. The Australian husband-and-wife writing, starring, and producing duo of Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer brings you the warm, funny, and romantic comedy Colin from Accounts. Winners of three Logies earlier this year—Most Outstanding Comedy Program, Outstanding Actress, and Most Outstanding Actor—the show debuted on BBC Two in the UK and is now available to watch on Paramount+ in the US.
Dyer and Brammall discussed the reception of the first season, their experience working with a big American studio, and the challenges of following up on a clear success with Mumbrella in the first half of this interview.
Does That Cliffhanger Ending Mean There’s Hope for Season 3?
One question remains after seeing all of the funny episodes from Season 2: After the shocking climax, where are Gordon and Ashley now? Megan, played by Emma Harvie, was Ashley’s best friend, and in this episode, she got married. At the celebration, Gordon confessed his love to Ashley, a sentiment she had expressed throughout the season.
Gordon seems to have the idea to pop the question in the midst of the dance floor after talking to Ashley’s ex-boyfriend James (Tai Hara). Attempting to pass it off as a joke, Gordon urged Ashley to speak about it later without accepting his proposal, and in the last minutes of Season 2, the two danced uncomfortably together.
Dyer says, “It was kind of a bit cheeky of us” to end the narrative that way. Forcing them to do it, Brammall says, hinting at the possibility of a third season.
Even though there has been no formal order for Season 3, Dyer is still holding out hope for more. “We didn’t get a note saying, ‘Hey, maybe we should tie this up so we feel like we’re in a good place for another one.'” she explains, shedding light on the matter.
“We haven’t gotten the word,” she says, “but also, we wanted our audience, who we love so deeply, to kind of be a little bit on their feet without upsetting them.” They want viewers to wonder, “What did he just do?” Dyer says. What gives with the conclusion? Poor guy. She’s not that bright either. What gives us the will to adore these two complete dimwits? Our expectation was that it would be that. In a way, we were hoping that people would be really angry with him.
And I’m a little irritated with her because I thought she could have given him more. We are all fallible. The point of the program, according to Dyer, has always been for Gordon and Ashley to be just as clumsy as one other.
According to Brammall, there was apparently an earlier edit. We had to tweak the finale and unlock the show to make it a bit more upbeat since in the initial cut, you were left wondering, “Is that it?”
You might have wondered if Gordon and Ashley could recover from such a public relationship disaster in the first cut, said the couple. “We had a change of heart and decided on some better shots and music,” Brammall says. They opted to make things “more awkward between them instead of ‘those two people are on an island and they will never make it,'” Dyer explained.
Is a Car Accident Going to Begin Every Season?
In the first moments of Season 2, viewers observed that a runner instead of a dog was injured by a car. This runner crossed paths with Gordon, Ashley, and the family who had taken Colin in Season 1. There was no deliberate comparison between the shocking scene in Season 2’s debut and Colin’s accident when Gordon ran him over as he crossed the street. As Dyer points out, “We wanted to make sure that there was still physical comedy in there because that was something that kind of populated the first half of Season 1.” We wondered, “Do we have enough physical comedy stuff happening?” when we began to create Season 2. It wasn’t always envisioned as a vehicle smashing into a man.
A corpse was Dyer and Brammall’s original intention at the frightening moment. What Dyer describes as “actually a body falling out of a coffin” is what he describes. “However, the idea of arranging a funeral in close proximity to the dog park seemed too complex.” The plan was thus executed.
